The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that Natalie Soderberg (Mara McCaffray) is actually Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) daughter. Longtime fans recall that Victor’s plane crashed many years ago, leaving him stranded in the Arizona desert.
Chet Delancy (Marc Singer) rescued him. But, that deranged man held Victor prisoner until his girlfriend, Ramona Caceras (Gladise Jiminez), helped The Moustache to escape. Victor and Ramona shared a romantic encounter in her home, which resulted in Natalie’s previously unknown birth.
Jimenez’ limited run as Ramona began in 1999. She later appeared as Carmen on The Bold and the Beautiful from 2001 through 2001. Ramona was written back into Y&R in the early 2000’s, when Victor opted to visit her and some other former loves.
Savvy viewers know that birth date matching doesn’t often work within the world of daytime drama, as Natalie would only be in her mid-teens in real time. In Genoa City’s reality she looks to be her early 20’s.
However, it’s important to remember that age advancements have been applied to each of Victor’s known children: Nick (Joshua Morrow), Vickie (Amelia Heinle), Abby (Melissa Ordway) and Adam (last played by Justin Hartley).
Natalie shares her mother’s great overall visual appeal, sharp facial bone structure and dark hair. It’s true that Ramona and Victor have brown eyes. So, Natalie’s striking green optical receptors must come from another section of her Caceras, or Newman lineage. As for the Soderberg name, that reflects her adopted father’s moniker.
It was curious that Natalie suddenly became Victor’s new executive assistant. Connie Wayne (Lise Colleen Simms) hadn’t been seen in awhile. But, Natalie’s announcement that Connie retired invented an opening for McCaffray’s character to be written back into the plot.
The oddness of Natalie’s revival was two-fold. There appeared to be no rational reason why this computer hacker would voluntarily choose to work for Victor. He fired Natalie months ago when her sabotage efforts with the PassKey project were exposed.
Ms. Soderberg’s refrain at that time included consistent contempt for Mr. Newman. The idea that she would be unable to find employment elsewhere, or would accept any offer for whatever reason seemed preposterous.
Plus, the Dark Knight didn’t trust her and seemed to be acting out of character when he flip-flopped in this manner. But, family love would explain Victor’s turnabout. How he came to this realization is another point to be pondered.
Chet is likely an obscure character reference for some readers: Before his brief stay on Y&R, Singer was known to viewers for his work on CBS’ classic nighttime soap Dallas and NBC’s science fiction series V.
One of the more memorable lines that Victor often repeated when he was being held captive was, “Let me tell you something Chet, …”. That declarative statement was routinely offered until both men fought and Chet fell off a cliff to his death.
