The teen was charged with three counts of attempted murder on Friday in connection with the shooting, which left two students and a teacher injured at Townville Elementary School. He is also charged with one count of murder in the death of his father, 47-year-old Jeffrey Osborne.
He is charged as a juvenile, and PEOPLE has chosen not to identify him because he is not charged as an adult.
His attorney, Frank Epps, could not immediately be reached for comment. The teen’s mother watched his brief court appearance on Friday from the front row and left sobbing, according to the Associated Press.
The suspect waived his right to a probable cause hearing, which the judge approved, and will remain in a detention center for the time being, court officials tell PEOPLE.
He has not entered a plea.
Police allege the teen took to the school’s playground after 1 p.m. and shot teacher Meghan Hollingsworth and two 6-year-olds before being subdued by a volunteer firefighter.
The shooter never made it into the building. Officials have not publicly discussed a motive for the shooting.

Hollingsworth and one of the students were treated and released on Wednesday, officials told PEOPLE. The other child, Jacob Hall, is on life support and in “very critical condition,” his family previously told PEOPLE.
“Jacob is a very sick little boy and is fighting for his life,” his family said in a statement. “Due to the massive blood loss, he has sustained a major brain injury … we are hanging on every second.”
The suspect’s father, Osborne, was found dead near the school, the county coroner previously confirmed to PEOPLE.
The coroner said Osborne’s death is connected to the killing and is under investigation.
Anderson County School District Four Superintendent Dr. Joanne Avery released a statement addressed to the school’s families on Thursday.
“We are shaken, but feel fortunate that the injuries were not more numerous or more severe,” she wrote.
The elementary school will reopen for class on Monday.
